SCMP Sports Mural

Hustle on the courts
the game of all sports
crossin over cats
while dressed in slacks
tempting to make a basket
these players couldn’t hack it
I’m the last man standing
surviving and grabbing
the ball to score all
the points . . . .Basketball

The community was invited to the unveiling of the Cultural Development Authority sponsored, “Sports in White Center” Mural back on Tuesday, July 22, 2003. Yup. The Sports Mural at Steve Cox Memorial Park has been brightly celebrating popular athletics and activities for over twenty years.

The King County White Center Park Teen Program and local artist Darwin Nordin presented the mural to the public along with words, poems and stories that helped to shape the artwork. The brightly painted mural panels depicting popular sports in the White Center Community were installed between the Outdoor Sonics Basketball Court and Mel Olsen Baseball Stadium.

Immediately following the mural unveiling, teen volunteers celebrated popular White Center Park athletic activities with families and community members. Scheduled athletics included Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer and Racquetball. To note, 3/4 of those activities are still going strong today!

The White Center Mural Project was funded through a special project grant awarded by the Cultural Development Authority. Thirty teens from the White Center Community created and painted the mural under the guidance of Artist Nordin and Storyteller Merna Hecht.
