Summer in Skyway

By Michael L

Oh, to be young again. Do you remember it? Ice tea on a hot day after some much needed yard work, The green soft grass beneath you and the feeling that summer was going to last forever. It’s important to get back to your roots I always say and this summer, that’s exactly what we did.

A typical summer in skyway for our program looks as the following; we head out to the park, mosey on over yonder to the chaise, grab our supplies, set up and hand out free lunches, arts and crafts projects and most importantly memories.

Well, we did all that this year-except for one key aspect. While we did go to skyway park, we in fact didn’t set up there and that’s because we completely revamped the once so ever old boy and girls back into the west hill community center just like old times.

This year we hit the streets running with a group of a whopping 13 talented and creative rec aids . We had quite a pool of different and diverse talents and it showed through our 7 different themed weeks; ranging from the exploration of colors to more stem based projects like slime and ending with more sporty themed games and projects, yes sir I think it’s fair to say we in fact did it all.

Our rec aids had the opportunity to help out with some additional programming out of the skyway library. They assisted families with painting, pixel art, bee art, puzzle algorithm-based games and so much more.

They also showed support for our local community events like the Juneteenth Celebration at Campbell Hill Elm, the Skyway Park Field Day, NIA fest at skyway Park, the Annual Safety Fair hosted by the Skyway Fire Dept, and ongoing distribution events organized by Public Health.

All in the team offered 500+ Rec Programs this Summer at multiple locations including Skyway Park, the Skyway Library, the Skyway Fire Station, Campbell and west hill Community center. Enormous thanks to the families of Skyway for another epic Summer Season!
