Summer Recreation Aide Program Recap written by Jonathan N
This summer, a team of 32 Recreation Aides supported a fun and inclusive program for youth in their communities. The Recreation Aides helped expand popular sites at Steve Cox, Thurnau, and Skyway, offered free lunches to participants 18 and under, along with a variety of recreational opportunities through crafts and games.

The Recreation Aides were the driving force behind the program’s success, designing and preparing the weekly themed activities. Themes like “Under the Sea” and “Outer Space” were among the many themes popular during the summer. They led small and large groups of children in a variety of engaging activities, including field games, sports, arts and crafts, reading sessions, and STEM projects.

The three program sites combined served over 4,500 lunches and snacks. The programs also distributed 4k arts and crafts activities. Beyond the lunch and snack programs, the teams supported community events like Night Out Against Crime, Movie in the Park, and NIA Fest. The skyway team also assisted in programming at the Skyway Library every week.

A new addition to the Recreation Aide Program in 2025 was the addition of Recreation Aides supporting structures at the White Center Teen Program. Four Recreation Aides (two in Skyway and two in White Center) were brought on to assist with arts, soccer, and basketball programming during the summer.

Through their hands-on support, the Recreation Aides ensured that every child had a fun-filled and inclusive summer. Whether it was through a shared meal, a new game, or a chance to connect with others in their communities, the team supported the youth to find success in the program.
